Participants' Experiences & Thoughts

Tony Schemmer

May 2013

Am returning today to USA.  Thank you for all your attentions, for the informative and healthy walks.  I particularly remember the Funeral Church, the monuments to Khachaturian and Rostropovich, the apartment house of the (soviet) stars....and walking all the way around the Kremlin with Potatoes!   I never got into it.  no time!

Zina you were wonderful to arrange the class and I enjoyed everyone there and please thank them all, every one, for attending.  Of course especially the young lady who learned the pieces!  Your faculty colleagues are great talents.

I must finish packing and go to Pulkovo!

For Aaron Larget Caplan

Admiring words from Russian listeners of the guitarist Aaron Larget Caplan

June 2013

Admiring words from Russian listeners, students of Professor Tatiana Kholostova from the Baltic State Technical University in St. Petersburg.  Many of them came up to me (Ludmilla) after the concerts at the House of International Collaboration ("Dom Druzhby") and at the Composers Association, and told me that they LOVED Aaron's guitar playing.  Here are two written ones, in Russian (my translation is provided below)

…..   Сказать Вам спасибо за приобщение к культуре. Благодаря Вам я первый раз сходил (на) концерт классической музыки. Не ожидал такого впечатления!  Это превзошло все мои ожидания!

"I would like to thank you so much for opening the culture for me.  Thanks to you, [Professor Kholostova], I, for the first (!) time in my life went to the concernt of calssical music.  I did not expect anything like that!  It surpassed all my expectations!

"...I am writing to you [Professor Kholostova] with gratitude for arranging for me to attend the musical concert.  In particular, I would like to say "Spasibo" (thank you) for the opportunity to hear an awesome guitarist Aaron Larget Caplan.

July 2013

As one of many lucky participants of the Educational Bridge Project, I traveled to Russia to be a part of the 23rd Educational Bridge Festival! My primary goal was to give a master class in American choral methods to Russian choral teachers, and lead a reading session in choral repertoire for children's and youth choirs. The master class was held at the Moscow Conservatory, and for me that was an unforgettable experience. I left Moscow 14 years ago, and at that time I was a post graduate student at the Conservatory. As years passed, I gained new experiences, knowledge and skills from American choral conductors and music educators.  I wanted to share that with my Russian colleagues. To my surprise, we were scheduled to meet in a room where I used to sing in a choir almost each day of the week, and many memories came alive. The master class went very well: choral teachers listened carefully and participated in exercises and warm ups.

My second adventure, and it was truly an adventure, was a visit to a choral school, Radost' ( the Joy). Its founder and artistic director, Tatiana Zhdanova, dedicated her life to building the school. She started about thirty-three years ago and now the school has seven departments including choral-vocal, folk orchestra, folk and choreography.

Dear Ludmilla,

I really enjoyed Zora Tsuker's masterclass a few days ago. She not only has great insight and knowledge, but also an extremely warm and positive manner, and I can see why she is such an effective and successful teacher. The students responded quite well, and I was gratified that we could participate in the Educational Bridge Project.

Best regards,

Jonathan
