I have very warm memories of my time spent in Boston in October 2001. Everything was great: the weather, our hosts, the music we heard…and it was remarkable how many students came to our concert at Boston University. And afterwards they came up to us to discuss the music, ask questions, and give compliments. One couldn’t resist the friendly and informal atmosphere!
I remember discussing with Boston University music students whether music by a young composer should please everybody. And unexpectedly we came to the conclusion, that if at least one person likes a piece of new music, then this music has a right to exist, even if the person is the composer himself.
Later we went to an opera performance. The student singers, who performed a contemporary opera (I don’t remember the composer), did it with such an understanding and serious and careful attitude that it was obvious that contemporary music was an absolutely natural part of their artistic culture.
And of course I cannot help but mention the main organizer of our trip to Boston – Ludmilla Leibman. Honestly, Ludmilla wasn’t just building a bridge between Russia and the USA, between St. Petersburg and Boston. In a way she was opening a new world for us, young student composers, a world very different from ours but at the same time very close and familiar.
It is impossible for a musician, and especially for a composer, to exist separately from the rest of the world. So regardless of politics, cultural relations between different countries should be warm, good-natured, and sincere.

Some events and moments of our life go by quickly, but later you remember them again and again. And the more you think about them, the more you appreciate them. For me the visit to America organized by Ludmilla Leibman was such an event. Since then almost eight years have passed, but it seems it all happened just yesterday.
Here we are: after some adventures, we get to Boston, lodge at Howard Johnson, and the same evening we go visit Ludmilla. And then there is a kaleidoscope of meetings and concerts, we visit Boston University, Harvard, and Tufts, and then again concerts and discussions. The prime “aftertaste” of this trip is the joyful feeling that far away, across the ocean, there are these creative people just like us, and we can share our ideas and plans with them and get sincere, good advice and answers to our questions.
I thank my lucky stars and the people who created this project. Thank you.

I talk about my Russia experience all the time and it has been long enough that you think it would fade away. I think one of the things I love talking about the most is my relationship with Galina Shirinskaya. It is such an amazing thing to me to know of her personal history and the relationships she has made throughout her life. I felt so privileged to be able to play with her and know that music was enough to communicate. Her daughter, Genya was there to translate, but we didn't need her that often since we were able to speak through music.
I also love to talk about the Russian people and how warm and welcoming they are. I was very impressed with their willingness to attend our concerts and was touched by their enthusiasm. I plan to return to Russia to rekindle some of these friendships when I am able.
My experiences in Russia have truly enriched my life. The Educational Bridge Project is an amazing opportunity for musicians such as myself to travel to a place I would normally not have the opportunity to, and to work with incredible Russian musicians. It was amazing to see the way we were able to communicate through music despite a language barrier. To be educated by being in a different part of the world by musicians who have astounding histories and backgrounds is something I have truly benefited from. I sincerely hope that this program is available for many years to come so that students of mine might have the same opportunity. It would be a tragedy not to enable others to have the same experiences for education and growth.
