 SPRING 2013, 23rd FESTIVAL PARTICIPANTS

Ekaterina Anoshkin was born in Moscow, Russia. She received her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in choral conducting from the Russian Academy of Music. After completing her Master's program, she continued her studies at the Moscow Conservatory’s newly organized department of Choral Singing of Contemporary Music. She began her teaching career while studying at the Russian Academy of Music, was a conductor assistant and taught solfegge and voice in the Children's Choral School “Phoenix" for 8 years. She participated in choral and vocal festivals as a piano accompanist, a choir singer and a soloist. After she moved to America in 1999, she became the music teacher for the New England Hebrew Academy and continued singing and working with amateur choirs (the Russian Amateur Women's Choir in Boston, the Wilbraham Mixed Choir, the Carlisle Intergenerational Community Chorus). Currently she is a doctoral student in the Music Education department of Boston University’s College of Fine Arts. Since 2009 Ms. Anoshkin has been the Acting Director of Music for the Unitarian Universalist Society of Wellesley Hills, MA.

 

David Chakvetadze, born in 1993, pupil of well-known Russian violin pedagogue Saveliy Shalman with whom he studied at the Special Music School-Lyceum under the auspices of the St. Petersburg State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory. Now he studies in his first year with Professor Shustin at the St. Petersburg Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory. David has participated in master classes with Grach, Sushansky, Danchenko, Lubotsky and has won many national and international competitions.

 

Born in Leningrad, Georges Devdariani graduated with honors from the Rimsky- Korsakov St. Petersburg State Conservatory Musical College. He continued his studies at the Royal Flemish Music Conservatory in Antwerp and later at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, graduating with a Master of Musical Arts degree in Musical Theatre. A winner of international competitions, Mr. Devdariani takes part in a variety of international musical projects, festivals and tours as a clarinetist performing in Russia, the USA and Holland. He also studied drama at the Amsterdam Theater School De Trap graduating in 2005, starred in the movie Hang and won two awards at the International Film Festival of Aberdeen, Scotland. In 2010 the short film, Desk Job, in which he starred, won the “Best Foreign Black Comedy” Award at the International Independent Film Festival in New-York. Mr. Devdariani first participated in the Educational Bridge Project’s Festival in 2012, narrating The Lay of Love and Death of Cornet Christoph Rilke by V.Ullmann- R.M Rilke. In a master-class on Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya. he coached student actors of the Drama Department of the College of Fine Arts at Boston University. His most recent filmography includes a part in F. Bondarchuk’s epic 3D movie Stalingrad. and a major role in De Spin (“The Spider”), a contemporary Dutch radio play by Radio 1.

Anny Kessous Dreyfuss, Ph.D., University of Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV), is a musicologist and affiliated researcher at the Center of Research of Comparative Literature (CRLC). She has taught at the Schola Cantorum, the National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations and the Elie Wiesel Academic Institute of Jewish Studies in Paris. Participant in previous EBP festivals, Dr. Dreyfus, this time, will be presenting her new book dedicated to that remarkable figure of 19^th century French musical life, composer, virtuoso, and teacher, Charles Valentin Alkan (1813-1888).

Guila Clara Kessous, stage director and actress, is Chevalier des Arts et Letters and UNESCO Artist for Peace.  She sees theater as a tool for testimony. In her performances she talks about the Holocaust, slavery, genocide, racism, anti-Semitism and everything that separates us, one from the other – her productions do not leave one unscathed, as for instance in her public reading of Helen Berr’s Journal. Her collaboration with prestigious authors such as Marie NDiaye, brilliant actors such as Marie-Christine Barrault, Stephane Freiss, John Malkovich, Daniel Mesguich and others testifies to the strengths of the message she conveys. As a teacher, she created the course, Theater and Human Rights at Harvard University and at Sciences Po Paris. Ms. Kessous has participated in several of the Educational Bridge Project’s festivals; this May she, along with actor Georges Devdariani, will perform a dialogue from the play, Mummy Returns, Poor Orphan, by contemporary French playwright Jean Claude Grumberg. In her parlance talking about “rescue” means talking about “the pain of being left alone” and the word “orphan” implies “the necessity of being a survivor”.

Aaron Larget-Caplan is a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. He has studied extensively with Russian master pedagogue Dmitry Goryachev, as well as David Leisner, Eliot Fisk, and flamenco master, Jonthan "Juanito" Pascual.  Larget-Caplan is the founder of the New Lullaby Project and the Spanish classical music and flamenco dance ensemble ¡Con Fuego! He has premiered over 50 compositions and released two solo albums: New Lullaby (2010) and Tracing a Wheel on Water (2006).  He can also be heard on Classic American Songs (2012) with baritone Donald Wilkinson, Vientos – Music of Hayg Boyadjian on Albany Records (2010) and on Parma Records’ Perceptions (2013) with the New England String Quartet.  Larget-Caplan is on the faculties of The Boston Conservatory and The University of Massachusetts, Boston. Ludmilla Leibman is a pianist, music theorist, and lecturer who taught for thirteen years in the theory/composition department of her alma mater, the Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory. After immigrating to America in 1991, Leibman received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Boston University and began teaching music theory on the faculty of the BU School of Music. In 1997 she established "The Educational Bridge Project" (EBP), which organizes annual educational and artistic exchanges between the United States and Russia. The EBP has since been incorporated as an independent not-for-profit organization. Dr. Leibman lectures and publishes in America and internationally on topics ranging from methods and approaches of American and Russian educational systems to the power of spiritual resistance during the Holocaust. She has been working with Russian colleagues to develop courses which integrate classroom and online teaching methods from both countries. For her achievements as an educator and for her efforts to strengthen cultural ties between nations, she has received numerous awards, including the Arts Collaboration Award (from her BU students), the Russian Journalists’ Award, the Medal of Exemplary Service from the Russian Government, and citations from both the State Senate and the Governor of Massachusetts.

 

Elizaveta Marchenko was born in 2001 in St. Petersburg. Since 2007, she’s been studying at the Special Music School-Lyceum of the St. Petersburg Conservatory (class of Zora Tsuker). She has participated in several international festivals, such as “Moscow Meets Friends” (2009, organized by Vladimir Spivakov Charity Foundation), “Abu Dhabi Classics” (2009), “Kissinger Sommer” (2009 and 2010, Germany), and “Lempaala soi” (2010, 2011 and 2012, Finland). In April 2013, she performed a solo program at the “Benefiz-Klavirkonzert” in Kempten, Germany. Elizaveta was a prizewinner at the St. Petersburg Christmas Assembly International Competition (First Prize in 2009 and 2010) and St. Petersburg Spring International Competition (First Prize in 2011).

 

 

 

Violinist Alexey Osipov was born in St. Petersburg in 1993 and graduated from the Special Music School of the St. Petersburg Conservatory (classes of Vladimir Ovcharek and Vera Dobrinina). Alexey is currently studying with Pierre Amoyal at the Conservatoire de Lausanne – HEM in Switzerland. Alexey has participated in Russian and International music festivals such as the Vladimir Spivakov festival in Moscow (years 2008, 2009), the “Kissinger Sommer” festival in Bad Kissingen, Germany (years 2003 - 2009), and the Abu Dhabi Classics concert season. He regularly performs concerts in Philharmonic Halls, the Mariinsky Concert Hall, the St. Petersburg State Capella and many other concert halls of St. Petersburg. He has given concerts in Holland, Spain, Germany and Switzerland and played with different symphony and chamber orchestras. Alexey has been a prizewinner of the following competitions: International Violin Competition in Paris (2005, first prize), International Violin Competition in Lvov, Ukraine (2006), International Festival Competition “Window to Europe”, St. Petersburg (2008, first prize), International Chamber Music Competition named after Dmitry Shostakovich, Moscow (2008, third prize), International Chamber Music Competition “Charles Hennen Concours”, The Netherland (2008, First prize), International Competition “New Names”, Moscow (2008), International Violin Competition “Premio Rodolfo Lipizer” in Italy (2009, Diploma and special prize). He is a grant holder of the Russian Fund of Culture, the Foundation of St. Petersburg Philharmonic Society, and the Maestro Yuri Temirkanov International Foundation for Cultural Initiatives.

 

Sergei Red’kin, born in 1991 in Krasnoyarsk, began to play the piano at age of six. He had studied at the Special Music School-Lyceum under the auspices of the St. Petersburg State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory, classes of Olga Kurnavina (piano) and Professor Alexander Mnatsakanian of the St Petersburg Conservatoire (composition). In 2009 he entered the St Petersburg State Conservatory (class of Alexander Sandler) and then trained at the International Piano Academy Lake Como (Italy) under William Grant Naboré with the support of the St. Petersburg House of Music.  

Prize-winner at numerous Russian and international competitions including the Chopin-2010 Festival and Competition (the St Petersburg State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire, 2010, I prize), the VIII International Ignacy Paderewski Piano Competition (Bydgoszcz, Poland, 2010, III prize) and the Third International Maj Lind Piano Competition (Helsinki, Finland, I prize). 

 He is a grant-recipient of Alexander and Irina von Bismarck’s Charitable Foundation (Germany), the Foundation of the Palaces of St Petersburg International Music Festival (Artistic Director – Maria Safariants), the Russian Standard Charitable Foundation’s Talented Youth of Russia program and the St Petersburg House of Music.

Has taken part in concerts and music projects such as the Baltika Youth Chamber Orchestra under Pavel Smelkov (St Petersburg) and the Youth to Youth program of the innovative project Open Stage set up by the Vladimir Spivakov International Charity Foundation.

Stephanie Sandbeck is a Master's candidate at American University’s School of International Service in Washington, D.C., where she currently is pursuing a Master of Science degree in International Development Management and also helps to coordinate the Washington College of Law's Legal Rhetoric Program. Stephanie received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Boston University in 2011, graduating cum laude. Ms. Sandbeck is a veteran of the United States Navy and a California native. After ten years’ experience in the legal field, she left San Diego to pursue her graduate degree. In addition to her studies and full-time work, Ms. Sandbeck spends her time learning French and performing pro-bono consulting to non-profits in the D.C. metro area. She will be speaking to Russian audiences about Viktor Ullmann’s opera, Emperor from Atlantis, written in the Terezin concentration camp during WWII, and the psychological impact of continuing to write music during the time of his incarceration.

Tony Schemmer, born in New York City, was graduated from Yale College, with honors in Theory and Composition of Music. He subsequently studied jazz with George Russell and conducting with Richard Pittman at the New England Conservatory, and popular music at the Berklee College of Music. His pop opera Phaust premiered in 1980 at Sanders Theatre, Harvard University, under Philip Morehead (currently Head of Music Staff, the Lyric Opera of Chicago). Bus, a play with music for children, was produced for the Columbus,Ohio Quincentennial by the noted Boston area children's music and theater group, PALS. His incidental, chamber and choral music has been presented in St. Petersburg, Odessa, Salzburg, Italy, Ireland, and throughout the US. Over the past decade, Mr. Schemmer has enjoyed collaborations with notable young “emerging” talents. With pianist Constantine Finehouse and cellist Sebastian Bäverstam, he has just released the CD Brahms/Schemmer, featuring Brahms op. 38 and three original compositions for cello/piano duo. Mr. Schemmer serves as a Director of the Harvard Musical Association, a member of the Advisory Board of the Boston Archdiocesan Choir School and as Overseer of New England Conservatory. His music is tonal with clear reference to the American jazz idiom as well as Western classical traditions.

 

Evelina Skripacheva was born in 2004 in St. Petersburg. She started playing piano when she was five, and in 2011 entered the Special Music School-Lyceum of the St. Petersburg Conservatory (class of Zora Tsuker). In 2011, she received the First Prize at the International Youth Piano Competition “St. Peterburg Christmas Assembly”. In 2012, she performed at the concert dedicated to Zora Tsuker’s anniversary, at the Small Philharmonic Hall in St. Petersburg. In 2013, she became a prizewinner at the International Youth Piano Competition “St. Petersburg Spring” (First Prize) and the Thirteenth International Scriabin Competition in Paris (First Prize).

Architect Vladimir Taytslin was born in Sevastopol, Ukraine, where he graduated from high school and the School of Arts.  In 1964 he was admitted to the Architectural School of the Leningrad Construction Engineering Institute (now the St. Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, SPbGASU).  After graduation he worked in several prestigious design organizations, such as the Matusevitch Studio of LenProekt, GiproGor, and MorNII Proekt, and participated in architectural competitions. He was elected a member of the Union of Architects of Russia. In 1980 Mr. Taytslin immigrated to the US and in 1985 received his architectural licenses in NY, MA, RI, and ME. From 1985 to 1990 he taught at the Boston Architectural College.  In 1988 with partners he founded the Children’s Academy of Arts and Letters in Newton, MA where he applied methods of well-rounded child development theories which he had studied in the Sevastopol School of Arts under the eminent pedagogue Eugene Kolchenko. For the last 25 years Mr. Taytslin has worked for the Division of Capital Assets Management of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as architect/manager for capital construction and has conducted his own private architectural practice in the region. He believes that architecture is not as much a static body of knowledge as a way of thinking.

Barbara Tornow has over 40 years of experience in higher education, primarily in financial aid and enrollment management. For the past 5 years she has consulted on enrollment issues for colleges and universities. From 1986 until 2007 she was an administrator at Boston University, first as Director of Financial Assistance, and then as Senior Advisor to the Vice President for Enrollment. Previously she had been Director of Financial Aid at Brandeis University and Clark University. She served on the boards of Hobart and William Smith Colleges, the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators and The Education Resources Institute which guaranteed private education loans and provided college counseling to disadvantaged students. She has also served on numerous advisory committees including those of the College Board, US Department of Education and the Massachusetts Department of Education and has been a presenter on financial aid topics at many regional and national conferences. Ms. Tornow has a longtime love of Russian music and culture and travels frequently to Russia and Ukraine. She has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Educational Bridge Project since 2007.

 

Alexey Vyakhirev, born in 1994 in Syktyvkar (Komi Republic) started his piano lessons in the Syktyvkar Music School at the age of six. His teacher was Galina Rasputina. In 2009 he entered the Special Music School of the St. Petersburg State Conservatory where he studied under the leadership of Professor Zora Tsuker. Currently, he studies at the St.Petersburg Conservatory with Miroslav Kultyshev. Alexey has won grants from the “ National Education’s Project” of the Russian Ministry of education and the Komi Republic government (years 2005,2007,2009). He has been a prizewinner at the Nord-West region of Russia’s competition named by Rimsky-Korsakov (II prize), the all Russia Competition “Young gifted musicians” (I prize),and the Maria Yudina International Music competition (II prize). Alexey participated in master-classes of Professor Alexander Mndoyants and Professor Ruvim Ostrovsky (Moscow State Conservatory) and in the master-class of Mikhail Boguslavsky (Jerusalem Academy of Music, Israel). He has also participated in music festivals like the All Russia Festival “Delphian Games”, Samara and performed in concerts in Germany (June 2012).

 

Evgeny Zaretsky was born in St. Petersburg in 1996, into a family of professional musicians. Since 2003, he’s been studying at the Special Music School-Lyceum of the St. Petersburg Conservatory (class of Zora Tsuker). He is a grant holder of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Society (since 2008). Evgeny was a prizewinner at the international piano competitions held in Lviv (2006) and Paris (2008, Grand Prix) and a special diploma recipient at H. Neuhaus Festival (Moscow, 2008) and Schumann-Chopin Competition (St. Petersburg, 2010). He received special prizes at Peter de Grote Festival (Groningen, Netherlands, 2010) and the International Chopin Piano Competition for Children and Youth (Szafarnia, Poland, 2011), along with an award for the best performance of Chopin’s Mazurkas. He has performed at Kissinger Sommer International Festival (in 2006, 2007, and 2009), in concerts given by Zora Tsuker’s students in various Russian cities, as well as in concerts organized by the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Society and Polonia Society.  Evgeny has played with leading St. Petersburg orchestras and has given concerts abroad, in Germany, Netherlands, and Switzerland.

Igor Zolotarev, born in Leningrad, began his musical studies in violin at the age of four. He attended the Special Music School for Gifted Children under the auspices of the Leningrad Conservatory where he studied with Ludmila Adjemova and with Larissa Baranova. Afterwards he studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory under Professor Antonina Kazarina, and became a 2003 prizewinner at the International Glazunov Competition in Paris. As concertmaster and soloist of the Students Orchestra of the Conservatory, he participated in numerous Russian and International concerts and festivals. Still a Conservatory graduate student under professor Kazarina, Igor joined the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra under the directorship of Yuri Temirkanov where he now holds a chair in the first violin section.

Дмитрий Павлий родился 12 апреля 1983 года. В 6 лет поступил музыкальную школу. В 14 лет продолжил обучение в музыкальном лицее при Санкт-Петербургской консерватории им. Римского-Корсакова в классе Н. И. Броверман. В 1997 году стал лауреатом международного конкурса "Ассамблеи искусств" (г. Москва). В 1998 году получил диплом на международным юношеском конкурсе им. П.И. Чайковского. В 2001 году поступил в Спб гос. консерваторию им. Римского-Корсакова в класс Заслуженного артиста России,профессора Л. М. Зайчика. Во время обучения в консерватории гастролировал по Германии, Голландии, Латвии. В 2003 году был удостоен стипендии "Вагнеровского общества" (г. Байройт). В 2003 году участвовал в фестивале "Дворцы Санкт-Петербурга", где был награжден специальной премией. В 2005 году продолжил обучение в аспирантуре на отделении сольного ф-но у Л. М. Зайчика, и с отличием её закончил. В 2010, 2011, 2012 г.   гастролировал с концертами в Пекине. В 2011 году выступал с оркестром Мариинского театра. Начиная с 13 лет выступал на концертах с камерными ансамблями. И наиболее крепкий творческий союз, который сохранился до сих пор - со скрипачом Игорем Золотарёвым. Репертуар Павлий Дмитрия многогранен и включает в себя произведения русских и зарубежных композиторов от классики до авангарда.
